Hamid Afghan, P.E., S.E.
Principal - Structural Engineer

Hamid Afghan is the founding and managing Principal of AAI Engineering. Hamid is licensed to practice in several states including Oregon, Washington and Hawaii amongst others. He has 40 years of structural experience and holds a Master of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering and Applied Science from Portland State University.

Hamid possesses a unique quality that resonates with many AAI clients. His ability to calmly address any project issue or constraint has proved invaluable. He routinely takes a difficult situation or problem, breaks it down into digestible pieces and produces a creative and economic solution without deviating from his calm demeanor. Hamid often develops a close working relationships with his clients which allows him to streamline and personalize a project.

Craig Harris, P.E.
Principal - Civil Engineer

Craig Harris heads up the Civil Engineering Department at AAI Engineering. He is a professional Engineer, licensed to practice in Oregon and Washington. He holds an Associate of Applied Science degree from Portland Community College and has more than 24 years of experience in the field.

Craig excels in project management due primary to his logical and ‘cut to the chase’ attitude. His designs are clear and well-thought-out, which translates to on-time and within budget. However, Craig’s ability to find common ground between clients and jurisdictions may be his most valued skill. His reputation for being able to obtain permits before the rain starts is practically legendary, and makes many AAI clients loyal and repeat customers.

Derek Larsen, P.E., S.E.
Associate - Structural Engineer

Derek Larsen has been an integral and solid member of the AAI Structural Department since 2003. Another native Oregonian, Derek grew up in Sweet Home, before calling Portland home. He attended Oregon State University and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Derek is amazingly proficient at organizing drawings and calculations into concise and easily understood packages. Clients working with Derek are often surprised to find that they gain a comprehensive understanding of the work, process and intricacies of their project and jurisdictional review staff are thankful to see Derek’s stamp on a drawing.

Chemelle Stark, P.E., S.E.
Associate - Structural Engineer

Chemelle was born in California, but found her home in Oregon. She attended Pacific Northwest College of Art and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She also graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Science. Chemelle has 14 years of experience in the field of structural engineering and is licensed in the states of Oregon, Missouri, Maine, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Montana.

Chemelle is one of those people who can take a project from concept to permits without a hitch. Her structural understanding is comprehensive. Her ability to work independently is surpassed only by the organizational skills she uses to do so. Her clients find her very accessible and responsive. She also possesses the valuable skill of identifying and understanding clients’ individual/project specific needs.

Ugo Costa, P.E., S.E.
Associate - Structural Engineer

Ugo comes to the Pacific Northwest via Buffalo, New York. He attended the State University of New York, Buffalo, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and the University of California, Berkley, earning a masters degree in Structural Engineering. Ugo is licensed Structural Engineer in the states of Oregon and California, with 21 years of experience in the field.

Ugo has been with AAI since 2010. During that time he has established a reputation for reliable, on schedule, project delivery and consistent quick response to client questions and needs.

Dustin Elmore, P.E.
Associate - Civil Engineer

Dustin made it to the Portland area in 2010, via Palmer, Alaska. He graduated from Montana State University and holds a degree in Civil Engineering. He has 14 years of civil engineering experience and is licensed in the State of Oregon.

Dustin is a gifted Engineer with the ability to juggle multiple projects seamlessly and efficiently. He is organized, precise and detailed oriented. Clients are continually impressed with his quick response and check-sheet turn around. He is always cognizant of the current status and next milestone for every project he is working on.

Norm Scheg
Associate - Civil Designer

Norm is an east coaster, originally from Rochester, NY. He attended Monroe Community College and graduated with an Associate of Science degree with a Landscape Architecture emphasis. Norm has been with AAI since 2004 and has 19 years of experience in the field of civil engineering.

Norm understands and is willing to do what it takes to get a project done, on time. His focus on the end result eliminates missteps and revisions and his ability to work through or avoid road blocks is unsurpassed. Norm ‘s projects are always managed with the utmost foresight and efficiency.

Beth Zauner, P.L.A.
Project Manager – Land Use Planner

Beth attended Auburn University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Ornamental Horticulture and Louisiana State University, earning a Masters of Landscape Architecture.  Beth been in Portland since the mid 1990s and has been working with AAI since 2005. She is a licensed Landscape Architect in Oregon and Louisiana.

Beth has a diverse background with experience in Site and Master Planning, Landscape and Urban Design, and Land Use Feasibility and Application preparation. This unique skill set allows her to understand and present complicated pieces of a project in a comprehensive manner.

Chris Lowry, P.E., S.E.
Senior Project Manager - Structural Engineer

Chris grew up in the Boston area, then headed northward to earn a BS and an MS in civil/structural engineering from the University of Maine. He moved to Portland Oregon in the mid 1990s and has been here since. Chris has 20 years of structural engineering experience and holds professional licenses in Oregon, Washington, Michigan, South Carolina, Kentucky and Arkansas. His focus is in industrial markets, particularly pulp and paper and wood products and has worked on more than twenty paper and wood facilities across the US and Canada.

Chris believes that his best resource for successful project delivery are the relationships he forges with his clients.  As a result, he has created many effective and lasting working alliances with clients from all over the United States and Canada.

Teresa Long, P.L.A.
Project Manager – Landscape Architect

Teresa attended Virginia Tech University, attaining a Bachelor of Architecture degree. After practicing Architecture in northern Virginia for 14 years, Teresa’s interest in Landscape Architecture led her to pursue a Certificate in Horticulture from the USDA Graduate School in Washington DC. Upon arriving in the Pacific Northwest, she obtained her license to practice Landscape Architecture, and completed course work at PSU in Project Management, Environmental Permitting, and Wetland / Watershed Development.

Teresa is a licensed Landscape Architect in Oregon and Washington, bringing over 20 years of Architecture and Landscape Architecture experience to her position. AAI enjoys and fully utilizes the diversity that her background and experience allows.

Clinton Cogswell
BIM Manager

Clinton is another of AAI’s born and raised Oregonians. He attended the ITT Technical Institute and holds an Associates Degree in Applied Science. A long time AAI employee, Clinton has witnessed the technological revolution first hand and does his best to makes sure AAI is at its forefront.

Clinton’s ability to problem solve is what holds AAI together. His calm response to employees’ occasional state of panic is one of his greatest assets. Another is his ability to resolve technological issues quickly and efficiently. He also provides CAD support for the Structural Department.

John Megrditchian, P.E.
Civil Engineer

John was born in California but moved to the Portland area in his early teens. He attended the University of Portland and holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.  He has 5 years of engineering experience and is licensed in the State of Oregon.

John enjoys working with clients and addressing specific project needs.  He is equally comfortable working with a group or independently. John excels at the eternal balancing act between solving unique or unexpected problems while maintaining project deadlines. 

Avi Singh, E.I.T
Structural Designer

Avi is originally from Fiji. He spent 10 years in Portland, attending Portland State University, obtaining a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Structural Engineering.  Due to family affairs, Avi works remotely. He is however, an irreplaceable member of the AAI family and we simply refuse to let him go. Avi intends to return to the office full-time in the near future. 

AAI clients love working with Avi. His work ethic, sense of responsibly and humor allow him to provide a refreshing project management style, as well as deliver an exemplary project.

Jonathan Sweet, P.E.
Civil Designer

Jonathan is a Portland native, who recognizes and values all that comes with living and working in the Pacific Northwest. He attended Portland State University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Jonathan joined AAI directly after graduation and has become an integral part of every project team with which he works.

Jonathan is known for being a reliable team player who will go out of his way to do whatever needs to be done, and then some. He approaches every task as a learning experience and always follows up his efforts with valuable insights, and time saving recommendations.

Mary Ryan, E.I.T.
Structural Designer

Mary comes to us via Chicago, and has been in the Pacific Northwest since 2005. Mary attended the University of Portland and holds a degree in Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structural/Geotechnical. Her experience and interests are wide ranged, including Geotechnical, Structural and Construction Engineering. One of Mary’s favorite parts of her job is working and problem solving with Contractors. Her understanding of the final product and the best way to get there routinely catches contractors by surprise and then results in her number being entered on their speed dial.

Reza Foulad, E.I.T
Structural Designer

Reza was born and raised in Iran. He moved to the US in 2015. Reza holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Masters of Science in Structural Engineering from  Sharif University of Technology. He also holds a Masters degree from the University of Central Florida in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. Reza currently holds an EIT license in the state of Texas.

Reza’s experience has focused on design and retrofit of concrete and steel frame buildings in Iran and new construction in the U.S. His work is always precise and exemplary due to his ability to focus on and resolve challenging issues.

Andisheh Afghan
Land Use Planner and Permit Specialist

Andisheh is a Portland native and a relatively new addition to the AAI team. He studied Mathematics at Portland State University and holds Minor degrees in Business Administration and Farsi.

Andisheh’s diverse interests and talents have allowed him to fill a niche within the firm. He applies his excellent people skills and common sense approach to planning, permitting and management efforts which has resulted in positive results in all areas.

Amir Goharjoo
Structural Designer

Amir came to the Pacific Northwest from Iran. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Azad University in Civil and Structural Engineering and completed his graduate studies in Earthquake Engineering at Semnan

Amir is always willing to assist in any aspect of a project. He often works behind the scenes to support all phases of project management and production. Amir has built a comprehensive and multifaceted bank of experience that benefits both AAI and our clients.

Nick Dailey, E.I.T.
Civil Designer

Nick is a native Oregonian, from Sherwood Oregon. He is a recent graduate from Oregon State University, with a degree in Civil Engineering. Nick is working towards getting his P.E. and licensure in the State of Oregon.

Nick is a dedicated, hard worker. Every job he takes on, he views as a chance to learn, grow and enhance his engineering skill set. He is a natural fit for the AAI office.

Erik Olson
CAD Technician II

Erik is a native Oregonian, with more than 20 years of experience in his field. He has been with AAI since 2004.

Erik is a versatile employee, working with both the Structural and Civil Engineering Departments of AAI. His time is always in demand here at AAI because the turn around is always swift and his work is spot-on.

Deborah Deragon
Senior Accountant

Deborah was born in Utah and attended Weber State University in Ogdon where she earned a BS in Accounting. She has 18 years of experience in Accounting, working with small to medium companies including Microsoft Partners and Engineering firms.

Deborah’s knowledge and experience is multifaceted and she is always willing to address the changing needs and dynamics of AAI. She is exceptionally good at working through complicated and varied issues on a seemingly daily basis.

Alison Baker
Administrative Assistant

Alison was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Portland ten years ago. after 14 years in the veterinary field, she discovered an interest and proficiency in the business and management.  Alison currently attends PSU and is working on a Bachelor’s in Business Management & Leadership.

Alison credits her meticulous attention to detail and follow-through as her greatest asset, however, she is equally known for her friendly, and compassionate nature.
